What Does Palliative Care Involve?

Palliative is a word that describes medical care that helps alleviate symptoms of illness without addressing a cure. This type of care is required when people are diagnosed with long-term, life-threatening conditions. It may involve several medical fields, professional teams, and caregivers. It can be provided at home, within an assisted living community, and in other settings. The Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living provides palliative care for residents of New Jersey. Here, we discuss everything that goes into palliative care.

Collaborative Care for Chronic Conditions

When a patient becomes diagnosed with an illness or disease that threatens their life and treatment protocols are not effective, it may be time to move into another phase of care. When palliative care is appropriate, the medical team remains engaged with the patient, monitoring the condition and prescribing palliative treatments.

In this phase of illness, there may not be a timetable or prediction about when life may end. And while the patient may not be near the end of life, symptoms of their condition may remain. However, these symptoms can be managed and relieved. The goal of palliative care is to help the individual live as full a life as possible with their disease or illness.

Palliative Care Is Comfort Care

People living with chronic, life-threatening conditions are often uncomfortable or experience painful episodes. That is why palliative care is also referred to as “comfort care.” We aim to help increase patient comfort, allowing them to continue living an independent and healthy lifestyle. At The Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living, we can provide this care at home for New Jersey residents, as well as within our beautiful assisted living campus community.

We deliver many services to individuals who need them most, including:

  • Pain management: Pain management includes medication management and complementary therapies, including massage and physical therapy.
  • Personal care: Personal care includes assistance with bathing, grooming, toileting, and dressing. It can also include meal preparation, light housekeeping, and companionship.
  • Emotional support: Emotional support can include counseling for the individual and family members, enjoyable activities, and pastoral care provided by the religious tradition of choice.

Palliative Care within Our Assisted Living Community

When individuals require assistance with tasks of daily living and also require help with symptoms of chronic illnesses, our assisted living community may be ideal. Residents can live as independently as possible with assistance from qualified, experienced caregivers. We also coordinate medical care with our staff. Residents receiving palliative care have access to the level of comfort care required to live as actively as possible.

If individuals experience symptoms related to forms of dementia, they can seek treatment within our transitional care program or memory care neighborhood. The specially trained, dedicated staff can help residents adapt to the challenges inherent to dementia diagnoses, as well as provide palliative care services that address other chronic illnesses.

Hospice Care at The Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living

The services we provide to our New Jersey communities and at our campus location include Stein Hospice care. When those receiving our palliative care services require end-of-life care, that is when we engage in hospice protocols. We continue to provide a holistic approach that accounts for the unique needs of each individual. Hospice care includes pain management, enhanced comfort, and tailored care plans that honor the individual’s wishes. We continue our goal of helping individuals achieve meaningful, independent living, even at the end of life.
